A team of Faegre Drinker intellectual property litigators won a complete defense verdict for our client, Seagate Technology, in a major patent infringement jury trial. Seagate, a computer hard drive manufacturer, was facing allegations that several microscopic layers in the write heads of their hard drives infringed a previously obtained patent. Led by David J.F. Gross and Chad Drown, the team argued that the hard drive write heads did not follow the structure of ultra-thin magnetic layers and crystals described in the previous patent. Following a two-week trial, the jury returned a verdict in less than one day. In addition to David and Chad, the trial team included Kevin Wagner and Kate Sorensen Razavi with support from Helen Chacon, Braden Katterheinrich, Lucas Tomsich, Kelly Fermoyle, Kirsten Elfstrand and Shelley Meyer. The team also partnered with Faegre Drinker’s Design Lab to create visual advocacy models to teach the jury the underlying complex technology in the patent.
